The Bloomfield area has close associations with Captain James Cook. In 1770, the barque "Endeavour" struck the reef north-east of Weary Bay as it sailed up the east coast of Australia.
Captain Cook proceeded to Hope Islands and crew members rowed a longboat into Weary Bay north of the Bloomfield River to look for suitable timber and to investigate the feasibility of careening the "Endeavour" in the Bloomfield River in order to effect repairs. Weary Bay was named by Captain Cook's crew members (for obvious reasons) but was considered to be an unsuitable site for their requirements.

The 'Endeavour' proceeded to Cooktown where the necessary repairs were carried out in the Endeavour River. Captain Cook sailed into the Endeavour River (where Cooktown is located today) in April 1770, departing in June 1770.

The village of Ayton (.5 km from Bloomfield Cabins) was named after Great Ayton, Yorkshire where Captain Cook was born.
